All My Cycle – Ayumi Matsuzaka

Brief overview of year-long body-based art performance.

Life on earth is sustained by symbiotic cycles of energy exchange. Our urban lives, however, are patterned on a linear process of consumption and disposal — from the supermarket, where our food magically appears, to the kitchen, through the body and finally down the toilet. What we call bodily waste actually contains the energy to generate new growth, new food.

Ayumi Matsuzaka’s year-and-a-half-long „body experience“ reconnects us, by proxy (although all of us can follow her example), with our role in the energy path between life and earth.

Together with several farm animals, Ayumi experiences the natural cycle of sustenance from ingestion through digestion, fertilization and regrowth; at the end (and start of the implicit next round), both Ayumi and the animals eat vegetables grown using their own bodily wastes. Their bodies thereby, metaphorically and physically, remember the connection.

Berlin and environs, 2010-2011.
